Hi Theblueamos: There is nothing wrong with track 4, but you have to use unZIP and not unRAR!!

Very nice, from the beginning to the very end. The viola is my favourite instrument so I'm being absolutely impartial on this! Although I must say I'm accostumed to hear how composers profit from its mysterious sound to create some sort of tension or directly ganz tough pieces. That a viola album displays such a melodious, dreamy air is something completely new to me.

By the way, the clarinet is one of my favourite instruments, although Ben-Haim's quintette is by no means easy.

Regards.

-THANK YOU to everyone for leaving wonderful comments-I shall reply to you all on Sunday, I'm going away and I'm already late! -Blue, please try shortening or changing the name of the file you are having issues with, that may help. If not, I will encode it differently for you when I return.

Regards everyone,

TZ

Hi Fèby, I will be happy to add info on this album, typing the booklet notes out is an option, I just don't have the time today but I will get to it!

Johannes the viola is one of my favorites as well, and would be even if such a colorful collection of viola jokes did not exist the world over to lighten things up ;) The particular melodious qualities you speak of, well let us not forget that it's within the musical context of English Pastoralism-listening to say a solo viola piece by even Hindemith feels a world away! What are your top viola pieces, whether concerti, solo etc..?

The Ben-Haim Quintette I will agree is not an 'easy', straight-forward work!

Hi Tzadik,

'English Pastoralism' might sound a bit offensive, but it's ok for me :D

My first viola love was, rather unsurprisingly, the Bartók Viola Concerto. The Hindemith viola sonatas, either alone or with piano accompaniment, are incredible, if only a bit hard to be listened to in a row. I specially like his Op. 31, with that incredibly energetic first movement and that surprisingly tender adagio.

The Kurtág viola pieces, well... it was HARD to come to terms with them. Lacking the slightest technical musical knowledge, at first I thought it was a joke. But, why would then ECM insist on paying a top violist to have them recorded and pretend to charge 20€ for a copy? By repeated listening I realized how great they are, if just sparing. A month ago I was luck to hear live Tabea Zimmermann play three of his Signs, Games and Msgs. They made much more sense to me then.

I'm now exploring the Weinberg viola sonatas. The first one I've attempted to get accquainted with is far more friendly (even cantabile sometimes) than one could expect.

Regards

Sorry to bother you Tzadik, but i had the same problem of "thebleuamos". I tried many times both using UNZIp or UNRAR but track number 4 doesn't work! the name is too long and with special characters. Could you please reupload just track 4 with a different smaller name? Thannks a lot for your wonderful blog full of interesting less known authors (I appreciate Rosner and many others...)
Franz

In order to be more clear: I can unzip the track file n.4 but I cannot open the .m4a file neither modify his name! So please if you can just reupload the file with a smaller name without special characters
Thanks in advance. Franz

Hi Blue, Hi Franz- sorry for taking so long to re-up the 4th track; I have forgotten about it until checking the comments just now. Not home, but when I am I will try it as an mp3...

Ok, here is track No. 4, encoded LAME mp3. I hope this helps! I can't get over how long the track title is btw, now that I've really looked at it:

04 Holland_ Ellingham Marshes For Viola & Orchestra (Ca. 1940) - Molto Moderato – Poco Animato – Allegro Giusto – Allargando – Tempo I – Cadenza – Allegro Moderato – Tranquillo.mp3

Sorry Tzadik, I am also unable to play/convert/rename track 4 - and the zippy file re-up has sadly expired.

legrandmaitre said...

I've managed to rename track 4 by using 7-Zip. Open with - choose program - browse - 7-Zip File Manager. Then you'll see the long file name, right click and rename. Close 7-Zip and the track now plays.
