Moussorgsky & Bartok - Rafael Kubelik - CSO - Mercury Living Presence

This historic recording is hands down my favorite version of Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Granted there are several amazing versions (Reiner, Dorati..) and the Kubelik is at the top of the list
with the best. Mercury's "Living Presence" recording is here astonishingly brilliant and three-dimensional, right from the opening "Promenade" to the staggering closing chords of "The Great Gate of Kiev". There are so many powerful moments. The Bartok is done very very well to boot. Most impressive of all is that this recording was made April 23-24th 1951. Mercury's single U47 Telefunken microphone was really something. Enjoy!
