Ippolitov-Ivanov - Orchestral Works - Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Donald Johanos (Marco Polo 1993)

Greetings everyone. Among other things I have the worst of colds and therefore I won't be really writing much of anything about the music, my eyes are too tired and glassy to do so. This is especially frustrating to me as these absolutely classic Ippolitov-Ivanov discs on Marco Polo are extremely important to me for several reasons, and bring back memories too of (further) 'falling in love' with Russian music; my ears have taken 1000's of enchanted journeys to Tblisi, Georgia, on to Uzbek terrain, and further imagined stops in the hometowns of my ancestors- St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Odessa, Boguslav...

Along with the Marco Polo discs of Ippolitov-Ivanov's "Symphony No. 1" and the "Caucasian Sketches" (there are almost countless recordings of the Sketches, many with better sound than
the Marco Polo, but still the early disc is just so very comforting and nostalgic for me) this
collection of Orchestral Works is pure bliss. Enjoy!

Many thanks bro!
In my opinion this is release is a rare gem. And since this is a 1993 recording you can expect production values for Marco Polo releases to go up (the production values and acoustic quality of the 1980s releases is somewhat questionable, to say the least). And more importantly, the release at hand featured works that the ASV label and Loris Tjeknavorian did not record (in my books, everything from the above works should have been on ASV discs, why not Chandos discs too?).
I believe that Chandos made us a boon when they recorded 5 dics full of Reinhold Gliere. The audio engineering is legendary and BBC Philharmonic is a virtuoso ensemble of quality.
I firmly believe, that the orchestral works that are rare gems require only one good and nifty recording, nothing more.
The same should have been true with Ippolitov-Ivanov and what you see on the above disc. But still the Marco Polo release is satisfying and succeeds in making justice to the unknown and unfamiliar Ippolitov-Ivanov.

In the meanwhile, Niyazi conducts Fikret Amirov's Azerbaijan Suite on Folk Tunes.

Right now, our only hope is Naxos. It's a slim chance for Chandos to go out and record forsaken works by Ippolitov-Ivanov, Fikret Amirov, Suleyman Aleskerov, Uzeyir Hajubeyov, Gliere, et al....

Great Tapirman, happy this disc is new for you, the Orchestral Works cd went under the radar quite a bit, surprising since it includes some of Ippolitov-Ivanov's most enchanting works. Saludos !!

Hello Joan, thank you for such a kind comment, I really appreciate it! Well, I have been drinking mostly green tea with jasmine flowers, and a lot of British/Irish breakfast teas, as I still can barely stay awake with the fatigue. I'm going to post a couple things (it's hard to keep away) and back to bed it shall be. Regards friend, Tz.

Aggelos you are most welcome friend, I'm happy this disc is new to you..at least it seems it is? I agree with everything you say of course, we seem to share one brain on all issues musical ;) The recording is, decent as far as the sound quality goes (decent-not great) however yes how very much I wish ASV had recorded these works, it seems logical that they would have. And Chandos, well that would be magnificent with their legendary recording/sound quality. It's all very frustrating to have such a small amount of disc offerings out there when it comes to I-Ivanov's music; really it's entirely a mystery to me. Said labels have of course put out plenty of mediocre releases over the years (and some mediocre composers, just for the sake of getting esoteric it would seem) so it's just baffling that Ippolitov-Ivanov's gems would lay waiting. Naxos is our one hope, and I have written to them in the past concerning more Ip-Ivanov recordings, not to mention other composers. Of course I added heaps of praise and gratitude in my letters as well!
-Thank you for the link, I will check it out. Also sorry I didn't check my email yet, in case you have replied. This cold is just beating me up. -Tz

Nice to hear from you t.b.a., no that's the awful part, I cannot afford to stay home (my situation is financial crisis..trust me this blog/music in general keeps me from a nervous breakdown) but it's affecting my equilibrium and so on, thus I can't really function at work. I am going to post just 2 things now though, so I feel I have done "something" these past days!

These posts should have come a few days earlier, I forgot that Ippolitov-Ivanov's birthday was November 19th!
