Here's a happy accident; earlier I grabbed this BIS disc and imported it, mindlessly assuming there was a Takemitsu work on it (I have visually similar BIS compilations I guess) and after realized there isn't. This is a great cd however, and I didn't remember Eberhard Werdin's "Concertino for Flute and Guitar with String Orchestra" at all, which is the first composition on the album and a very good one at that. It has a certain Hindemithian feel here and there, especially in the first movement; the 2nd and 3rd movements that follow are also beautiful, with the flute and guitar dancing together and quite the Spanish atmosphere in the 3rd movement, so very graceful, and even castanets join in the merriment (I instantly thought of the Boccherini Quintets, not to mention the sound world of Joaquin Rodrigo).
I was happy to (re)discover the Concertino! The other works I particularly enjoy are Gunnar Hahn's "Suite for Flute in Folk Style" which is inspired by Swedish folk music, Castelnuovo-Tedesco's "Sonatina for Flute and Guitar", and the wonderful Jacques Ibert, his "Entr'acte pour Flute and Guitar", 3 minutes and 18 seconds of pure charm with a dash of Iberian flavor. Haha yes Joan you are absolutely correct; BIS has some rather amusing cover "art" on some of the earlier discs, and this one is perfect ;) -I have to say, over the years I have seen a whole lot of "what were they thinking?" type of cd art/photos(one good example is a Richard Strauss disc from the 90's on Virgin Classics, the cover was a photo of a fat-faced pouting baby....wtf as they say), on various labels. I almost feel like uploading the best examples on the blog!
It's a great disc, I bet if I added my own "cover art" the disc would be downloaded with great frequency; I know that some people will skip over things that do not have a"Chandos" or Hyperion-like appearance to them, pristine, and with lively colors and so on. I'm *not* saying that that's most people, that would sound as if people are shallow. No, it's more of an innate human trait, the visual response to what's pleasing (again I think I really might post a "best of" funny/odd/ridiculous album covers at some point!).
Gunilla von Bahr is also a great name that perfectly fits the picture!!
I have to confess that in the past, before inmaterial music was all over around, I used to browse discs in bargain sections and I bought some just based on the cover artwork. This is how I dicovered a lot of rare but wonderful music.
Ha, it is the perfect name eh ;) I understand, I too had discovered/noticed many a discs due to the visual aspect way back in the day; also if it was a composer I hadn't heard of, that made me more eager to get it of course! Tz
