Colin McPhee - Symphony No.2 - Concerto for Piano with Wind Octet - Nocturne - Balinese Ceremonial Music

The most "Balinese" - and also most fascinating - music on this second Colin McPhee disc is the "Balinese Ceremonial Music" for two pianos, with its complex rhythms and use of complicated displacements of what may perhaps be termed "stacks of harmony"; it really is a wonderful, evocative and stirring work. Similar techniques permeate his excellent, though relatively modest, Symphony No.2 (the symphony is also on the disc that I posted just before this one, as is the "Nocturne", so we get two versions of each). The other piece besides the
two piano "Balinese Ceremonial Music" that is unique to this disc is the Concerto for Piano with Wind Octet,
an early work (1928). It's conventionally neo-classical (no gamelan elements here), enjoyable, and clearly indebted to Stravinsky. Enjoy.

Mr(?) Tzadik - nice to hear from you; glad you got lots of replies to your plea for contact !
Will try to communicate a little more frequently, though no wish to become a bore.
Have a few of Rosner's larger-scale works; will download the chamber CD & try it, thanks. Not convinced I'll ever learn to appreciate these smaller works.
This Mcphee will augment my small collection of his music - many thanks !

Hello again cjvinthechair. Yes, I am a sir, lacking knighthood however (it's coming I'm sure). No, you won't become a bore, I love to discuss music so should you fancy do leave comments when you can and I shall eagerly get back to you; I have very few friends whom I can discuss (Classical) music with. Happy you enjoyed the McPhee! Kind regards

cjvinthechair I meant to ask-the Rosner works you already have, did you purchase them or just stumble upon them someplace? I;m always curious when someone actually already has his music!!

theblueamos you are very welcome of course :) Happy you enjoy! -Was it a typo of sorts when you said "so far" all the best (from Jerusalem)? Sounds a bit ominous , should I be concerned? ;) Although to be serious I'm not up to date on news (cannot afford cable tv at the moment) as I dislike reading from bbc news etc. online, too much glare for me. Anyhow I'm not kidding, hope it was just a typo! Regards friend

Juanito,pa no confundir jejeje!!!

Thanks Piterets. I thought one has to join rutracker, or that it's torrent. I guess I'm wrong. Anyhow I do have about 5 other McPhee discs, so I might have the same ones. I shall check though! -Cheers

Hola (Juan?)
Saludos !!

More McPhee is welcome! I would love to collect all his recorded works. I did not think that he has many recordings.

Yep there's more, and some pieces are repeated on several discs, but worth having diff versions

Ah, Mr.Tzadik, sure the knighthood's 'in the post' - as it should be for all you selfless internet uploaders; amazing what happiness can be created by a common interest amongst strangers from around the world !
Rosner - well, wish I could recall. Have learnt so much on so many sites from internet folk over the last 3/4/5 years. If it hasn't come from You Tube, probably from one of the specialist sites like ArtMusicForum, where the level of expertise, for a musical idiot like myself, is overwhelming !
If you truly can do with some communication...perhaps we'll correspond further ! Clive (UK).

Musical idiot?? Oh please do not call yourself that....I cannot have any idiots visiting my site, tis bad for my image ;P Happiness created indeed, I wish there were some sort of local "meet up" group for classical lovers, but nothing around here. Sure, correspondence is great; can be via comments or via email. Kind regards
